I have just set up my mother's Sony Bravia TV to her Plusnet wireless router via a lan antenna hooked up to the TV. The TV internet service now works using the TV remote, and I can send anything on Windows Media Player with the little green button, but how can I use the TV as a second monitor as you can with a cabled setup, so what's on the computer screen is shown on the TV, assuming this is even possible as nothing online shows it can be done. Windows 7 using an HP laptop.

HDMI cable is the normal way to do it - the assumption being that you don't watch the big TV and walk around the house with the streaming laptop at the same time.

So, use the laptop to browse to the streaming site (via the wireless router) then HDMI cable to the TV.

As she was set up with a lan system with the TV I didn't think having a cable trailing across the floor instead from the laptop would have been needed instead, presumably if you can connect directly using the cable method the wifi should do exactly the same thing as it does with the router signal?
What is the model number of the tv? There are many Sony Bravias.

@David

I wasn't picturing any trailing cables, rather a case of positioning the laptop near enough to the telly for a 1.5m cable to reach the set and not risk being tripped over by persons or pets etc.

With Win7, I find the act of plugging in the HDMI causes a brief black screen on the laptop before the screen options menu appears.

The one potential hiccup of the whole setup is that the master remote control handset needs to have a button to control input source switching (TV, AV1, AV2, HDMI1-4. An old-style Sky controller, for example, doesn't have one. The original Bravia remote needs to be kept to hand.
