would be a reasonable price to pay a local solicitor for visiting your home to make out your Will?

Just a straight forward will, no estates or complicated money issues.

If he is visiting you to do it then more than if you go to him as the same amount of work will take him longer and there will be travel time. i am not sure whether he could "do"your will then and there. When we did ours, we made notes about what we wanted (and it was very simple, one benefactor and one alternate incase the benefactor pre deceased us) went to see him and told him what we wanted, he made useful suggestions about how to achieve it then we went back a week later to check it and sign it.
If it really is simple Will get a pro-forma Will from W.H. Smith or similar and write one out yourself. There's plenty of advice available on the internet:-

When my wife and I made ours at the solicitors' office, which I think took two visits - one to settle the details, then one to do the signing - the bill was £250.

A solicitor's time does not come cheaply. Two visits might easily add another £250.

Make the most of Free Wiils Month. It is arranged by charities in the hope that you will leave them some money, but there is no obligation to do so. It is this month.

When Mrs Jom and I made UK wills about 6 years ago it cost £70 at our local solicitor. It wasn't a particularly simple one either.
Since travel time will be charged at the same hourly rate as any other time, it's an extremely bad idea to have a personal visit. Simply attend at his office if you can't or don't wish to DIY.
These people charge their time at around £200 per hour. Obviously that doesn't all go in the solicitors pocket, they have an office to run.

Thanks for the post.
looks like a DIY one as the freewill dont do my area.
Who else do they run at that price?

On the subject of the DIY Will,
Do you have to have someone like your doctors or could it be just 2 friends, and do they have to read it before they sign? Thanks
No trt - they don't have to read it, they are witnessing your signature, not the content of the Will. They are signing to say they physically saw you sign the Will,
The purpose of the witnesses signature is to verify that they know it is you and they verify that they saw you sign it. No they don't read the will. They are not checking it. Really recommend you read the book published by the Which? magazine if you are intending to go DIY. It explains the core principles as well as the process.

Thanks to both of you for clearing that up.
I imagine it would be cheaper to go to the solicitor, even by taxi.
sadly there isn't any in my area.
