Do those big brown spiders that we find in the house at this time of year spin webs or do they just lurk in corners waiting to scare us? If they do spin webs the one created by the spider on my wall this morning must be of gigantic proportions - Jurassic Park size.

My cats unfortunately play with the big ones and chuck them about giving them ample time to run off. I don't have a good word to say about large house spiders, they terrify me.
I had 2 whoppers in the bath last night but theyve disappeared - where, I wonder ?
Divebuddy is correct in saying not all spiders make webs, however these days with foreign spiders making appearances any I see are dead meat,a few years ago we had a small box of tooling delivered to work, when it was opened out popped an Australian red back,so I dont take chances.
Booldawg - "I think they come from Hell - via the plug hole in the bath."

This is a popular myth.

Spiders end up in baths and basins because they slide induring their travelsa round the house, and can't climb out, which is why you find them there - as OG advises, a towel draped into the bath and left for a day or night, they will soon go.

Spiders can't come up plugholes, there is a U-Bend full of water that would prevent them from getting up into the plug.
They do come out the overflow though, I've seen it happen - and they won't get any ladders privided by me
Could've chosen a better time to discover I'm also afraid of conkers.
I always put conkers in the corners of the rooms - at the moment they are last years hence the one in the bedroom that Mr Q had to rescue me from. (I am off conker hunting this week end) Mr Q has kindly ordered my a vacuum spider (and other beasties) catcher. I will be ready and armed!!!
You can buy a spray to keep spiders away - and its main ingredient is essence of conkers! My flat is sprinkled with horse chestnuts and thus I haven't seen a big spider in years (fingers crossed...).
that's a job for tomorrow then, armed with large bucket go and find a horse chestnut tree .
They do spin webs. I've just dislodged a huge female from the corner of the ceiling in my spare room, then I found another female in the bath with just a few bits of legs from the male she had mated with then eaten. Nice
[i] ..on the local news tonight, police stopped a crowd of adults 'conker collecting' with gusto amongst the horse chestnuts on the cricket fields this afternoon. One witness claimed 'They were a surly bunch and just muttered as they picked up the conkers a type of mantra: 'Conkers scare off spiders... conkers scare off spiders...' Investigators are assuming the crowd originated from AB land, but are following up on further leads [i]

I have some webs at high level in the house but they are from small spiders. The big ones just forage about.
