How Can I Send E-Mail?

When I am at home I can both receive and send emails on my ipad.

Now that I am away from home I can only receive mail, i.e. I cannot send.

I have received a message that I want to forward on, but I get an error message "cannot send mail" and that a copy has been placed in my outbox because the recipient "[email protected]" has been rejected by the server.

What do I need to do, please?

You should be on wifi.
if you have updated to iOS8 go to “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and check the settings.

"You should be on wifi."

Sorry - I don't understand your reply.

My ipad is connected to wifi. As a result of this, I am able to post here, but still I cannot use my Mail app to send mail, only receive it.
problem with intended receiver...check e mail address

...and no, I haven't updated to ios 8.0

I was once taught never to upgrade to ios n.0; always wait for n.1 at least!

Who is your email provider, some only allow sending via their SMTP servers if you are on their network, you may need to change your outgoing mail connection to be secure (if they offer the option) or configure a new outgoing server, if you have an Appleid then you should be able to use that.

The error message wording does lead one to think there may be an error in the recipient's email address, but I've sent mail to these addressees before - most of them are even in my Address Book!

How do I identify my email provider? What is an email provider?

...and yes, I have an Apple id. What do I need to do?
Your email address would be something like '[email protected]', who is the 'something', it is probably whoever supplies your internet connection at home
Question Author
Ok. Many moons ago My dial-up connection ISP was Freeserve. The "something" in my email address became "fsnet". Freeserve became Orange, who I think now may even be EE. However, I switched from dial-up with Freeserve to broadband from TalkTalk about 9 years ago. Within the past 12 months, after numerous reliability problems, I moved to Primus broadband at home. I am currently away from home with my wifi connected to my host's BT wifi.
I have retained the same email address for the past 10 years.
Ok, go into settings, mail, contacts & calendars, scroll down through mail until you see default account, note what it is, scroll back up to the top where it says accounts and select the account you just noted. Scroll that down to advanced and select mail, scroll that down to outgoing mail server and see what that says, tap on the server and see if you get any others, if there are no others or they are switched off you will need to either switch them on or add a new one, if you have enabled your Appleid you should already have an iCloud SMTP server defined so you should be able to use that.

Thanks. I'll try this. Please bear with me. It may take me a while!

Ok. I went into Settings. Then into Mail, Contacts & Calendars. I found the default account listed. Back up at the top I went into the default account, went down to Advanced, but in Advanced there's no Mail option. I'm stumped! What am I doing wrong?
Hmm, in mail, contacts, calendars where you see the default account what does it say underneath in smaller text, if mail is enabled it should say so, if it isn't I'm a bit stumped too. As your mail is coming in somehow you need to see which account it is coming in on and then try following that through to find the outgoing (SMTP) server
Question Author
Underneath the default account name, in smaller text, it simply reads "Mail".

Does that mean it is enabled?
Yes it does, so when you tap on that account, what do you get, if it shows you your email address tap on that, somewhere we need to get to the outgoing mail server, it might be if you only have mail activated for that account that there is no 'advanced' option
Question Author
When I tap on the account (where it says Mail underneath) it opens the account information.

There is an incoming and outgoing mail server listed.
And the outgoing server is?
