Have you run all the Windows xp updates? An audio driver should be downloaded with them. If not, search on net for the model of your pc and see what audio device was included. Download drivers for that audio device.
What audio device are you using, whatever comes on the motherboard, of an audio card you have plugged in ? If the former you may have a fault, if the latter ensure it is plugged in properly. Do you get sound if you plug in earphones ?
Is it possible that you have blown your sound card ? Did you unplug /plug in your speakers while the speakers were powered on ?
I'm confident that you've simply failed to reinstall the sound driver. If you can tell us the exact make and model of your PC we can direct you to the download you need. (Once you've downloaded the file you simply need to double-click on it to install the driver, then restart your computer and enjoy sound once again).

If you can't specify an exact make and model, download, install and run Belarc Advisor. That will tell you the make and model of your sound card (if your PC's got one) or of your motherboard (with on-board sound). Then tell us what you've found out.

Thanks Chris. Realised although I had Belarc on all previous PCs never got around to putting it on the latest. Just did, it claims 12 missing security updates ! No idea how.
