Holding the independence referendum is a current Scottish government policy (with the power to do so temporarily granted to it by the UK government) so the Scottish government will foot the bill.

According to an impact assessment report signed-off by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in March 2013, the estimated cost of holding the referendum was predicted to be £13.3 million.

Not as much as I was expecting, if the estimate is accurate. Thanks for the info
It seems that £13.3m is a drop in ocean for the Scots to give their citizens a referendum, and they also have enough available funds to provide their citizens with free university places, free prescriptions and free elderly care if they need to go into a home.

They must be better at managing their finances than our lot in Westminster, but then you never hear of the Scots dishing out millions to overseas countries, and supporting those who choose to come over here and milk our services.

Perhaps the Scots believe in 'charity belongs at home'?
Oh God hasnt the dear old buffer one above never heard of the Barnett Formula ?

Dear old AOG - the scottish economy doesnt balance - well it does after you take into account £1500 per head that the govt gives the Scots admin

so THAT's how they get free prescriptions and free uni place - you old f+ol ! YOU pay for it thro your taxes !!
Dear AOG !

of COURSE the scots think charity begins at home.
out comes the begging bowl and the English govt puts £1500 into it for every person in the house !

Lord love us ! Didnt you hear the scots OAP saying 'now the english govt has guaranteed our scots pensions we can vote YES on behalf of all the young people and give THEM a chance '

[ and by voting yes - condemn them to years of penury but that of course is another story ]
Those sound exactly the sort of things that should be available to all in the UK. Maybe one reason we feel the need for an English government.

It's a bit like dropped kerbs, in a way. No one is supposed to have rights to the road outside their house but build a drive and get permission to drop a kerb and it's effectively yours. Now you have an advantage your fellows do not, so that makes them feel they need to do the same even if beforehand they realised it wasn't such a good idea. Such as it is with your own area tier of government. One gets it so then we all need the same to be treated equally even if before we realised it wasn't such a good idea.
We should get one of those massively expensive really fast train links up here
You can't want to be getting out that fast ?!?! The Nos won it.
It is England who are out of step regarding University fees,as i understand
that all over the EU there are no fees for Uni.

Yes we are out of step; because we are funding the jocks, fuding overseas tyrants, funding a corrupt EU there is sod all left fir us.

In addition it is now ckear that we fund the Scottish shoppers.

I think we (England) should have a referendum to leave the UK.
If a French student or any other EU student wishes to study at a Scottish uni then they can for free, but if you are English and want to do the same you have to pay, sort of wrong imo. We get screwed by the Scots every time.
Wasn't there some sort of vote recently concerning a high powered police position? 3% turnout?? Now that's a total waste of money. Perhaps someone on here will remind me of the circumstances.

If you want the perks that Scotland gets there is absolutely nothing stopping you from getting them. Just move to Scotland.

Don't you dare call me an 'old buffer' or even an old f+ol, you idiot.

See how insults catch on when they are not chastised in the first instant by Auntie ED?
On TV last night a Scottish person who was supporting the yes vote stated that he was fed-up with the English 'sponging' off the Scots, there's irony for you.
What ever the cost is - it was worth it.

The eventual cost of a split would have been incalculable in all sorts of ways.
^Such as £Trillions in lost oil & gas revenues for Westminster to squander.
It would have been better if they paid for it out of their own pockets if they wanted a vote, not expect the poor south of the border to pay as usual.
Baza The English started the Uni.fees thing. A Scot has to pay fees at an English Uni.so it is equitable that an Englishman pays fees at a Scottish Uni.

And who do YOU think is paying for the referendum Baza ?
