Congratulations to Scotland for it democratic decision.

In the speech of Salmon he said that the voice of Scottish people had spoken "...at this moment" and it is that "at this moment" that worries me.

The quote of Winston Churchill at the end of the Battle of Britain seems as appropriate to Scotland as it did to the UK in those dark days of 1940:

I fear that this result has just awakened a sleeping giant and unsettled times are ahead............I hope not.

Sqad - you too have notice that there are a set of questions

OK folks this question is now decided for ever and there is no going back

and that seems to be same on scots independence....
the q is continually posed until the answer someone wants is given and then it is set in stone ( in this case because no country has voted to rejoin any dissolved union )

The reason why you have noticed it alone... amongst all these is possibly the inception of NHS was subject of voting until the doctors said yes.....


However.... Quebec decided on union by only 56 000 vites and the premier of Quebec was particularly badly behaved over it - and THAT has been deemed decided.....

Probably will Prudie. The nature of politics seems to be if you reject something it gets asked again & again until the answer changes and then is considered done and not returned to. The EU have shown to be past masters of it, although bribes, er sorry concessions, to the rejecting voters' area help that process. On morning TV I heard this has been "settled for a generation". So how long is that; folk have children in their 20s/30s usually don't they ? So it'll come back after just a couple of decades ?

I just hope the difference of opinion proves no trouble for all. I find it sad almost half wanted to reject being part of the island's grouping. Feels a bit like finding your sibling doesn't much care for you; although I suspect folk will claim everyone analysed the situation properly rather than going on sentiment.

Meanwhile Alex still seems to be winning this "devo max" thing, which may well have been the real aim, with a split being icing on the cake for him. Another promise of treating one area of the UK worthy of more than the rest. If power devolution downwards is a good idea it should have been discussed sensibly for all regions of the UK equally, not forced from weak politicians by threats of leaving.

Meanwhile congrats to the No camp on achieving their temporary stay with the rest of us. And commiserations to the Yes camp, as discussed above, no doubt your time will come again sooner than anyone can reasonably expect.

So its turned out just as most people predicted it would. It has to be admitted that Salmond had a mountain to climb, but if he had equipped the campaign with more than a lot of fart and thunder, he might have been successful.

But on all the occasions when he was asked to explain some really important things, like the economy and currency, he just waffled away, getting bluer in the face every time. The YES campaign had very little substance, once you had stripped away all the tartan and heather, and its this lack of real gravitas that was their downfall. A decisive result not to Balkanise the UK, for which we must be truly grateful.
