/// The US President announced plans this week to send 3,000 American troops to the region to help build new healthcare facilities. ///

Surely there are enough 'humanity workers' that could carry on this work without the need to send in the troops?

The Health/Humanity Workers are there to aid the sick.

Troops will be 'better' able to control the population in areas of high risk and hopefully prevent this terrible disease from spreading needlessly.
It's the same all over the world. The military and police become the governments useful obedient tools to do the job that others have no stomach for

Maybe the health workers, but there are plenty of aid workers who dig wells and build schools etc, etc.

And how do you suggest that armed troops will control the population, surely you are not suggesting ................?
Doubtless the soldiers will be comparable to 'our' Engineer Corps...

I mean, as I am sure you well know, that soldiers will be able operate a more disciplined and controlled movement of the local populations.

Ah yes, the US equivalent to our Engineers, are you old enough to remember John Wayne in the film 'The Fighting Seabees' what a cracking film.

But I can't see why they have to be Engineers to control crowds, surely the Military Police would have been more appropriate?

But why put them at risk in the first place of catching this deadly disease or even spreading it further?
They will probably be building healthcare facilities in addition to manning checkpoints, etc. They are all trained soldiers whatever their particular trade.

I'm sure all risks have been assessed and addressed....
AOG, just out of interest, have you ever been to an African third world country?

Why that should be of any interest, have you?

I've been to Africa, but Africa is a very large continent, and it all depends on what you class an African Third World country,

By the way I haven't been in outer space either, if that is also of any interest to you?
That’ll be a ‘no’ then. Easy to criticise when you have no experience of the situation.
To answer your question AOG...no, this isn't what it really means...next question please !
