I was in York, in a pub, when Mo ran, and won, the 10k m in the Olympics. The whole pub was singing 'there's only one Mo Farrah, there's only one Mo Farrah'. It was magical and I've never been more proud of people accepting multi cultural Britain. Anyone who forsakes their country of origin to run for Britain has balls. It's just a shame some Luddites think...
Farah was born on 23 March 1983 in Mogadishu, Somalia.[22] He spent the early years of his childhood in Djibouti with his twin brother.[23] He later moved to Britain at the age of eight to join his father, speaking barely a word of English.[23][24] His dad, Mukhtar Farah, is an IT consultant and a British citizen, who was born in London, England and grew up in Hounslow.[25][26][27] Mohamed's parents had met during a holiday.[27]
"and if he was paid he should donate that to charity. "
Why? The Great North Run is a serious athletic event as well as a fun run. That's the beauty of the sport. If it was possible for Sunday leaguers to have as kickabout on the pitch at the same time at the Champions League Final you would not really expect the professionals to donate their money to charity would you (it would be nice if they did but you shouldn't expect it :-) )
Mo quote in response to the disgusting DM 'plastic Brits' articles which it ran prior to the Olympics:
Look mate, this is my country.
This is where I grew up, this is where I started life. This is my country and when I put on my Great Britain vest I'm proud. I'm very proud.
"Anyone who forsakes their country of origin to run for Britain has balls."
They do indeed, although in Mo's case it wasn't even like that. As you point out yourself, he was already established in this country before he became an international athlete
He is British whatever anyone says. Well done to him for winning the Great North Run. I like the man, as he says he's very proud to run for his country - GB. End of...
On Jordy's basis, we should throw out quite a lot of our 'British' gold medallists, anyone from Pete Reed (rower, born USA) to Bradley Wiggins (born Ghent, Belgium). Mo was brought up here, regards himself as British, has his own charitable foundation.
To me, the man is brilliant, the major flaw in him being that he is a staunch Arsenal supporter.
