try wiping the area with a wet cloth and then sprinkle with white talc and leave to dry, then hoover, should lift the stain out,we used to do this years ago when i was an army wife and the matress had to be spotless when we moved out.

Hand held steamer then hairdryer it may be?

thanks for the suggestion. As for hiding it it is obviously hidden by the sheet, I was looking for a serious answer but never mind, it takes all sorts.
Is it actually water?
I was serious, but never mind.
If you have a watermark that covers one entire side it won't show. I am not being facetious but helpful.
The handheld attachment of a carpet cleaner should do, something like a VAX or maybe rent a Rug Doctor from your local Morrison's supermarket.

1. Blot any remaining liquid with the towel until the mattress is dry. Don’t rub the liquid or you will widen the stain.

2. Fill a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide. Spray the stain and allow it to sit for five minutes.

3. Blot the area dry with the towel.

4. Clean the spray bottle. Refill it with water and distilled white vinegar.

5. Spray the area and blot it with the towel. The vinegar will not only aid in removing the stain, but it will also deodorize the mattress and hinder the growth of mold and mildew.

6. Allow the mattress to dry outside or near an open window

To Queen 1954 my very grateful thanks on how to remove a mattress stain. I am well over 80 and have never come across this tip before, worked a treat and got rid of some old talc. I have osteo-arthritis in both hips and limited use in fingers so I dont know what or how managed to spill, even a little water spreads a lot. Many thanks
Bezzy, I am very pleased it worked out well.

I apologise for the annoyance I caused you.
