Don't rely on comparison sites for your best quotes. I would tend to phone around. The best local companies in my opinion are Hughes, Abbey, and Open and Direct.
There are many factors which determine the cost of your insurance and inexperience will play a large part in this.
Having said about phoning around, the cheapest quote I got for my 17 year old daughter's first time insurance was from Adrian Flux on line which, although still quite expensive, was less than half of the nearest price.
It definitely pays to shop around!
BTW, my own insurance is just £200 fully comp for a 2.0L 2008 car for BT15.

what else brings your car insurance down ?
-- answer removed --
There are many factors. Age, driving experience(proven with your No Claims Bonus),number of accidents, postcode, type of vehicle, age of vehicle, size of engine, what it is used for, where it is kept overnight, annual mileage.
So you can reduce your annual premium for example by, getting a car with a small engine, driving carefully especially at night, limiting your annual mileage, keeping it off road or preferably garaged at night. You can also get a black box type device linked to GPS which monitors your driving for example speeding, braking, hours of use.The better and less hours (especially during the hours of darkness)you drive the cheaper it should be. One more thing by not carrying passengers at night it may be cheaper as you wont succumb to peer pressure to show off.
Hope this helps.
