Brother prescribed them for Limbic Encephalitis. Whilst at the bedside a nurse came to check blood sugars. Can you tell me please why blood sugars are being checked with this condition?

Yes.

Steroids may have an effect which is to raise the blood sugar level. it may not be so important in the normal state of affairs, but in diabetics it may well be significant.
Even patients who are not diabetics may be slipped into a pre-diabetic state when taking steroids.

Sqad, thank you for a quick reply x
Watching Everton v Chelsea, I cannot get your post out of my mind.
Limbic Encephalitis is certainly not a common condition and i would be interested in any follow up of your brother's condition.

Sqad, he's been hospitalised for the last two weeks, now being assessed for release home to the care of his family. Short term memory loss/depression/hallucinations/anxiety attacks/ extreme tiredness. His consultant is hoping to very gradually lower his dose of steroids.
Thanks for the update.....danger now over.
