I am a self confessed numpty with mobiles, so can anyone tell me if I can use bar and hotel WFI in Europe and Asia to WhatsApp back to the UK.

Your mobile doesn't differentiate between wi-fi services. If it can connect to one in a bar or hotel (anywhere in the world) it will provide you with the same internet services as when it connects to your home router. (The only exception is when the actual service is only available in the UK, such as watching most BBC TV content on iPlayer, but that doesn't apply...

Yes - you'll possibly need to log into the hotel's wifi and accept their T&Cs before they let you in, but the hotel will give you the password if necessary.
