I've just seen an ad on the telly for a part-work magazine, enabling you to build a model of the U-96 U-boat, with the first issue on sale for just 50p. I've absolutely no interest in building such a model (and I'm surprised that the publishers obviously think that there are enough people who actually will be) but, just out of curiosity, I've looked at the website to see the real cost of the model.

In really big print you see "Issue 1 Only 50p".

In smaller print there's "Usual price £5.99"

In really small print it says "Model complete in 150 issues".

Any takers?

>>>Surely the total cost is a mere £893.01

Oh well, if that's all it really is, I'll start collecting straight away then!

I do have about 60 copies of " the Dolls House" in my loft! Kept telling myself that I would complete it when I had more time/ retired.

Well I am retired now so maybe I could ask my son to get up there and get it for me for the long winter nights.

Goodness knows how much it cost, probably close to a deposit on a real house.
About 20-30 years ago there was a gardening magazine that came out, you bought special binders to put them in, I must have spent hundreds of pounds of them as I seem to remember lots of these binders on my bookshelves. Was it Popular Gardening? My memory is not too good.
At £900 a time few will be made.

So think how many £1000s it will be worth to a collector !

Go for it. Let us know how it goes.
I see the train is a bit dearer, it's £1040, some people must have more money then sense.
Its a lame duck - The Mallard...
Is it life-size?
also, always 1 or 2 issues that do not appear,so model never gets finished
. . . and the engine and gearbox for the Mallard are options at extra cost!
Cost of a blue print for a WW1 U boat - free from the German equivalent of the war museum.
Cost of scrap metal to build said U boat - free with some judicious skip searching (however it may take some considerable time to amass a suitable quantity, so enlist the help of your family and friends)
I am not mechanically minded, but if you are, then I am sure you could adapt a few car engines obtained for a reasonable sum from a scrapyard into something to make the U boat run.

So you see, a real U boat could be built from scratch for far less than the £900 a model would cost.

Mind you, the cost of a divorce from your wife who is sick to death of your new hobby could work out dearer than £900

Thanks for all the contributions above. (Sorry for the delay in replying; I've been doing other things).

LOL @ Aggie's joke. (She must be quackers!).

As Mrs_O suggests, the guys on Scrapheap Challenge could have probably knocked up a working submarine for well under 900 quid!
Add a few quid more and you could maybe build the real thing. These things are always a rip-off.
