Should Britain Be Experimenting With An Ebola Vaccine?

We are expected to police the world and now attend to it's ills, should it not be Africa that is experimenting for a drug to combat a disease started in Africa?
Will the 'guinea pigs' be British Africans or White British, and to all those who think it a good idea, I ask would you volunteer?

So why didn't you use that exact form of words then?
For 'more susceptible' to bear up to scrutiny, Ebola would have to be present worldwide but only people in one geographical location got sick from it. So far, it is localised to a handful of countries and white aid workers got sick just as readily.

and that neatly solves the issue of danger-flights ( dangerous no more ) AND the lack of correct subjects for inoculation

Yup I would volunteer for Ebola vaccine - oops I am immunosuppressed I am not sure if they would accept - but then if I got immunity, you could be reasonably sure it would work for everyone else.

are vaccines safe ? yup we showed that at porton down in the sixties [ hence my impressive vaccine record ]
and do vaccines show racial differences - yup BCG is good in anglo saxons - about half as effective in the Indian population, and doesnt work at all in one of the American tribes - Navajo I think - THAT work was done in the thirties no less.

How does one do it ?
well you could do a live vaccine - cell culture would be better however the trick is to passage thro a non human host. Pick one - duck or monkey or rat.
After a while, it loses pathogenicity for humans....
Pasteur did this for rabies 1870.
or you could do a killed one
gets lots and lots of ebola virus - cell culture again - and then kill it with alcohol or acid. Inject into rats and see if they die when you expose them to real Ebola
Killed vaccine was first produced for polio -and typhoid - didnt work too well in typhoid
or you could do a protein based one
get lots and lots of ebola - and break it down, physically ultrasound or chemically - enzymes. Inject said protein into rats and see if they die when challenged with ebola. Modern Cholera vaccine
so there you are - that's how you do it
funnily enough, all the fund applications for that yummy £2.3m
will roughly echo the analysis above.

PP, all drugs and vaccines are tested on animals, but at some point they need the human test.
Yes, we should be trailing these drugs here. Unless we want to shut all our borders we need to be prepared for any disease that may reach our shores. Or be in a position to help countries that are not as rich or scientifically advanced as we are.

sp if the vaccine doesnt kill a dog or a rat then it probably wont hill a human.

er - no that is what you do to produce the vaccine whch works
not how you show it is safe -safe and effective are different
