So, I understand the technical side of the above, I'm wondering how it works in practice though.
For those of you who've got/had one, what happened after you put it up here...did you get inundated with spammy type emails? How did you know that the person/people you wanted to hear back from was in fact that person and not some random idiot pretending to be them? Did you keep that throwaway or did you delete it? What problems, if any, did you encounter after posting one here? Or didn't you have any problems? Would you do it differently in retrospect?

I've had no problems.
I've got a throwaway address for my AB friends. I've never had any problems. I trust the people to whom it's been given. I've never had any spam.
Same here. No problems at all.
As long as you don't use a name like johnsmith@ and use something difficult to guess (use something like 3thanR0n@) you should be okay for spam, until people start to pass on the address
No problems here either, the only emails I get on it are from valid sources.
If it becomes a problem just delete it and get a new one, but don't forget to tell your friends first.

What about when you first set it up though, and posted it here? Did you only get an email from the person you wanted to, and how did you know it was them? Did you then pass on your personal email address, once you were confident it was them, or do you keep the throw away one?
if you need an email address just for a very short term action such as registering with a website then use something like guerrilla mail https://www.guerrillamail.com/ (others are available) - that's what i'd call a throwaway email address, anything else is just an email address
I was only contacted by the person that I was giving it to. As they were just answering a query I had no reason to disbelieve who they were.
Never had a problem ethandron I rarely check it now as majority of people now use my everyday email :)

Ps all is still going well
If you post it on a forum or give it out on survey forms etc then you will get spam.
If you just let a few trusted contacts know the email address then you should have no problems for a while, but eventually may need to start again as it may get harvested eventually.
Another tip is to use a password that is hard to guess.
If you only want to use an email address as a one off you can use a very unmemorable password like 4tH3Yhh3$4 since it doesn't matter if you forget it
