1400 children abused......

cases of beatings, petrol being poured over them, and even worse.

Where was the Council and police, reports and complaints covered up? Not one council employee reprimanded or punished.

Disgraceful, absolutely disgraceful.

What will be the fall out of this? Other Yorks towns similarly affected?

I have no idea whether that is just because Leicester has a very large Asian population, or that British Pakistani men are more likely to commit this type of crime for 'cultural' reasons.
------------------
Well, when you have a culture where young women disfigured as a result of refusing to marry someone they've never met or being murdered by their own parents for nothing more than 'honour' or acting like a Westerner in a Western country you tend to get a view of the mindset of how males view women in that 'culture'.
The true sad fact is quite a lot of Asian men view women as,well nothing, and white British women as less than that. Until that issue is addressed, these cases will crop up time and time again.

sp, yes the kids are paramount in this...however, there are other commonalities and the first one to me seems to be the cultural differences that many of these groups are hiding behind and, secondly, coupled to that, a lack of 'education' to the women of these societies to come forth and help put the blocks on it, call it a societal confidence tied to the cultural differences.

Now in terms of going forward, perhaps we really need to define the ground rules and move towards an Australian model (though that is not perfect by any means), one that extols that, and I am really paraphrasing here for brevity's sake, ' we are, we respect and we encourage a pluralistic society where religious differences are tolerated; however, those of different religions and immigration groups have to learn and respect our customs and laws in the setting of a common, secular society."

Maybe, with that, we could start to progress somewhat, step by step and certainly not overnight - and, yes, this is beyond the politics of one major party.
Chilldoubt most Leicester Asians are hindu or sikh, not muslim and honour killings are extraordinarily rare. Please conduct more research in your stereotyping.
Also, most Leicester Asians are Indian compared to say, Bradford, where most are Pakistani.
I subscribe to Private Eye magazine who have been talking about this for years.
The powers that hid it aren't Pakistani are they?

Mine was a general view of Pakistani Asians FrogNog, Leicester was mentioned because it was in the c&p and I didn't remove it.
I'm well aware of the different cultures, not removing the word Leicester was an oversight.
...and I frankly don't care how rare honour killings are, it still doesn't detract from the general view they have of females:

No, or it would probably never would have even come to light!
The powers that be were stifled and undoubtedly reluctant to act at the merest hint that they may be accused of racism for simply performing their duties, such is the PC culture that has pervaded these Isles in the last 20 years.
Was that the case for Jimmy Saville? Rolf Harris? Stuart Hall. Cyril Smith, and since we're talking about Leicester, Greville Janner and Ratcliffe Road Childrens' home.
All of these situations were hidden. I am as appalled as everyone else by this and I accept there is some disgusting cultural involvement. What I want to remind you of is that is lots of cultural involvement in every culture and to single one out is bigoted and unfair.

That is precisely the stance that in all probability led to those Police force's and agencies that should have dealt with these crimes taking a less pro-active stance and ultimately not doing the jobs we entrust them to do.

Why is it that Westerner's located in Asian countries do not commit crimes of a similar nature and to such a scale?
Why are charities similar to this not set up by ex-pats, where they recieve ridiculous amounts from that country's government?:

In fact, no need to answer, it's fairly obvious. They don't care for nor promote multiculturism, whereas it's supposedly de rigeur here, but seemingly for PC reasons and not much else.

ChillDoubt, there are many 'westerners' who settle in countries such as Thailand for one reason only, many more who travel for that specific purpose.
The real problem is how to nip this sort of thing in the bud in the very early stages. Girl meets older man, usually in his late teens/early twenties, and is flattered by the attention. She unwittingly sends out signals that she is needy, vulnerable and then it starts.
She quickly believes she's in love and nobody or nothing else matters. It may be weeks before he shows his true colours and she won't have the maturity to deal with it.
It causes rows at home which pushes her further to her 'boyfriend' as 'nobody understands'.
If she's in care she will start absconding. Police will be called, they'll find her and bring her back, but she can't be locked in. She refuses to make any sort of statement about the man, claiming he is good to her. And on and on it goes, police called, fetch her back, absconds.
Parents will get the social services involved and it's the same scenario. Parents can't lock their children up.

I don't know what the answer is. The police and social services may be aware but can't do much without the girl making some sort of statement.

Indeed hc, but to my knowledge Thailand isn't a Muslim country nor governed by the Sharia. Thai people tend to have a far more equal view of their females than other cultures, which is central to the direction of this thread.

Thailand is not the best example as there are very different values to sex in society, something that westerners (and the Chinese) have exploited. Prostitution is the norm there and many a Thai father takes his 14/15 year old son down the local knocking shop to lose his virginity...There's also the lady-boy acceptance, the 3rd sex, something that also appears in Indian society through the 'Hijra' and in many Pacific societies, such as Samoa, where a man often has a wife and also a 'Fa'afafine' - the concept of being gay does not exist there.

I come back to this cultural and educational issue and how best we start the move to a secular and open structure as core to accepting immigrants into this country, whilst respecting their right to religion. Muslims are of particularly difficulty with the Koran underpinning their society and law - but the issue here is that they 'have to live as the Romans do' - nothing less.

My views on this are encapsulated in last night's thread:

sorry about that....
"What I want to remind you of is that is lots of cultural involvement in every culture and to single one out is bigoted and unfair."

That may be true if the others that you mention were not equally castigated, FrogNog. But they are. However, this particular episode refers to events that took place almost exclusively among Pakistani men and it was not addressed properly because of fears of accusations of the very racism and bigotry to which you refer.

Jimmy Savile, Rolf Harris and others of that ilk got away with their crimes because their celebrity made the people who should have acted fearful of the consequences if they did. This lot escaped justice because those who should have acted were more concerned with preserving "social cohesion" than detecting crime and bringing the perpetrators to book. And that situation arose because they were fearful of condemning the particular odious culture that prevails amongst many men of Pakistani origin.

People in the UK must be told to live by the accepted standards and laws that the country has laid down. This applies whatever their origin, whatever their background, whatever "culture" they may have followed elsewhere or here in the past. The sooner that is accepted and enforced the better.
NJ...I know of no country or religion where gang rape of young children, boys as well as girls, is an acceptable mode of behaviour. It goes on in all societies, all over the world and is hardly unknown in Britain ( eg, Elm Guest House ) but these are anomalies and are widely condemned and never defended. To suggest that it is acceptable in Muslim communities, as some on here have suggested is the worse type of racism.
//To suggest that it is acceptable in Muslim communities, as some on here have suggested is the worse type of racism. //

It is acceptable in some Muslim communities - in fact some Imams encourage it. That's not racism, that's reality. Get real, Mikey!
Provide proof Naomi please, that some Imams promote the rape of very young children.
We’re not talking about the rape of very young children. (But actually, if you’d like to check out the Ayatollah Khomeini you might be surprised - not that he encouraged vaginal rape - I'd hate to misrepresent the man).
