Dvd Won't Play Properly On Laptop

Played a DVD on my laptop for the first time last night and it worked fine. Tried again tonight and the sound seems to have disappeared and the picture is disjointed as if it's running too fast (although it says it's running at 1 x speed).

Any ideas what's went wrong?

I've got windows 8 (or could be 8.1) if that helps.

Yeah, tried 3 different ones and same thing happened each time.
