I wonder if fellow ABers might have a solution to a seating I have recently expierienced.

A while ago I had to change the toilet seat to an old (I think really old) toilet pan.

Actual fixing was as easy as pie with the fixing bolt going through the elongated hole in the pan and fixed underneath with - in this order - cone shaped rubber washer, plastic spacer washer, metal washer then nut.

All seemed OK but now after as little as 24 hours the seat is moving about really easily! This is despite using the supplied 'spanner' (looks like a large plastic wingnut).

Will the porcelain take using a usual spanner, which, as far as I can see, will tighten it a great deal more? Any other suggestions appreciated

Seems like too many washers to me. If you over tighten it, the plastic bolt will shear. I must admit I didn't quite understand the last paragraph.
In the past I've wrapped the part of the threaded rod that's located within the porcelain with insulating tape until it's a tight fit then applied the supplied hardware to hold the seat firmly in place.
If you're going to use a proper spanner, wear eye protection. It'll go off like a bomb. :-)

Z-M The bolt is metal. Only piece of plastic is the spacer

The final paragraph is to ask if there is a danger of the porcelain not taking the extra tension which I will get if I use a conventional spanner - in a mechanics toolbox - compared to the supplied (plastic) 'wingnut' spanner.

And judging from douglas9401 it might be a bit risky!
I think that you normally fir a neoprene washer above the pan to stop the seat moving about. You don't want to end up dead pan!
and of course it should be "fit" not "fir"!
They don't usually need to be that tight, Puter. A rubber/plastic washer on BOTH faces of the porcelain should stop it moving around.

Possibly... you mention a spacer... if that's a sleeve type that slides onto the bolt, then it may be too long for the thickness of the pan. It may be getting tight before it grips the pan properly.

Plastic washers are a waste of time - they slide too easily on the glaze on the pan. Try your local plumbing outlet for rubber washers of the same size. They won't cause the seat to slide about

Thanks for all the suggestions but it seems that I might have to rethink this

a) There is a plastic-type washer above the pan already
b) The spacer does not fit on the bolt firat. There is a rubber washer between it and the pan.
c) Id have to get the plumber to come to me as I am housebound!!

firat = first
heathfield has the answer. The DIY store replacement Toilet Seats come with cheap and slippery plastic washers. Replace those with decent rubber washers and your throne is secure.
