When ever I watch documentaries about the C19th most events seem to occur in the 1880s. What was special about this decade.

It was the start of the Second Industrial Revolution, colonisation was rife, lots of wars and some of the literature published back then is some of the best ever written
it's also the case that a lot more illustrative material was being produced then, and documentaries on film or TV need such material. The 1870 education act greatly increased public literacy, and more books and newspapers were produced to meet demand. Photography became more widespread too. So documentaries on that period have more to work with.
