Feel a bit "iffy" posting on R&S after reading naomis post re: sad passing of an ABer so please forgive me.

Just wanted to get your take on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the gospels. Ive read the gospels, and the teachings of Jesus dont really give me anything to shout about. In fact I actually find them quiet absurd and dont know anyone who actually lives by them. A few examples....

"Turn the other cheek".... would you honestly invite someone to hit you again after receiving a black eye? Would you tell your child that if a school bully wallops them to turn the other cheek and get another wallop? Seriously?

"Believers can walk on snakes and scorpions and not be harmed"...not testing God here, just asking to see the credentials of a true believer. Ive got a friend who keeps snakes but 'believers' seem to shy away from exposing their feet to them.

"sell all you have and give to the poor"....I know 'believers' who have an awful lot of money while im struggling with bedroom tax and benefit reforms. In comparason im poor but they still go on cruises and buy nice cars..

"Dont plan for tomorrow and dont save for the future"....so no pension schemes, mortgages, or bank accounts?

"if someone steals from you dont try to get it back"....so if I nick your purse you'll forgive me and I can get to keep the contents?

"if someone wants your tunic then you should give him your cloak as well"....To the bible believers on here, im asking you to give me your T.V. And based on the TEACHINGS of Jesus, I expect you to throw in your DVD player as well.

(bible quotes available on request! However if you have to ask for chapter and verse it just goes to show that you dont know your bible...)

I don't think anybody claimed that it was goodlife, now get back on track. Wandering into politics doesn't suit you.
Keyplus, That it was written on bits and pieces during Mohammed’s lifetime is irrelevant, and people reciting it word for word proves nothing at all. The fact is most of the information it contains was already in the public domain when Mohammed put twig to stone. Mohammed was a wily old merchant. There is nothing new of any consequence in the Koran.

By the way, I have never relied upon anti-Islamic or atheist websites to teach me about the Koran. I prefer to gather my information straight from the horse’s mouth.

//And you do not have common sense either.//

How you wish that were true. ;o)
Goodlife, any chance of answering my question? Why do you think Jesus’ family thought him mad?
Modeller, //He was illiterate…//

We don’t know that he existed, so we certainly can’t say that he was illiterate.
Naomi - "... Mohammed was a wily old merchant..."

Nice turn of phrase. If a little understated.

;-)
goodlife //This surely is not peace from God.//

We are yet to see even the tiniest hint of the peace you and your kind have been saying for the past two thousand years that your god is going to deliver "very soon".

You are completely deluded into participation in the world's oldest surviving cargo cult.

Birdie, :o)
If I was to sell my possessions and give them to my poor 'neighbour", then I would be the poor one so he would have to sell his and give back to me.

I'll just keep my large screen TV and save us all that to-ing and fro-ing.
