just seen a lovely travel cabin bag with wheels ( timberland ) in tkmaxx yesterday, i was going to buy it as it was only £49.99. there was a guy next to me with a measuring tape and he informed me that easyjet have changed their luggage policy recently to 50" in height.

surely i think if i bought this it would still fit into overhead compartment and easy jet would need to be real tight asses not to give anyone an extra 3" overload ? its only the wheels that give an extra 2-3" onto overall size of bag.

really want this bag , what do you think ? stick to the rules ?

Stick to the rules, they will not allow any extra at all even a couple of millimetres too large and you will not be allowed it.
If you don't stick to the rules you run the risk of a hefty charge to put the bag in the hold.
Think these budget airlines have a place you put your cabin bag in when you check in and if it's too big it goes in the hold and you are charged an arm and a leg. Believe the wheels are included in the overall measurements. I wouldn't risk it.

have the overhead cabins got smaller ? has the luggage guage at checkin been made smaller to measure your bags ? does anyone know this ? surely it would take a fine set of eyeballs to spot a bag just a fraction over ?
you will not be able to take it as hand luggage
BTW, be sure to know the difference between centimetres and inches.
^^ wheels definitely included, no chance unless you want to pay as hold luggage. As said they have a gauge, if it does not fit the gauge it does not go in the cabin end of!
50cm is guaranteed in the cabin, upto 56cm is dependent on how busy the flight is and will be placed in the hold FOC.

Budget airlines usually require passengers with large bags to prove that they'll fit into the measuring cradle by the check-in gates. If it doesn't fit you'll either have to pay a hefty fee to have it placed in the hold or, if the loading of hold baggage has ended, choose between travelling without it or missing your flight.

I'm assuming that the 'inches' in your post actually means 'centimetres'. In which case the 53cm you've quoted exceeds easyJet's GUARANTEED level for carriage within the cabin but is still WITHIN the acceptable limit for carriage on the plane. (i.e. they WILL take it, and consider it to be your free cabin baggage allowance but, due to limited space in the overhead lockers, it MIGHT have to go into the hold on busy flights):

The bag you want would meet the requirements of Ryanair
http://www.ryanair.com/en/terms-and-conditions/regulations-cabinbaggage/
but only the first 90 such bags can actually be carried in the cabin; others are placed in the hold.
Flying out on Easyjet they just looked at our hand luggage and nodded. On the way back they made us fit it in the cage to make sure it was within limits. (both their higher limit). So not worth the risk as it will cost an arm and a leg to put in the hold at the check in.
The most efficacious solution to this dilemma would be the purchase of an item which would fulfill all the published requirements of airlines with which in the future you might be intending to travel upon... Jeez, I'm staring to sound like P D James!
Do they stick to those three measurements or the volume they produce? My camera bag is below the length and width sizes but over in depth. Overall the volume is less then those figures produce.
That's some cabin bag at four and a half feet long!
That cabin bag is bigger than any of our suitcases. 53 inches?
...that's the problem when people refuse to get metricated!
I think the issue with the blinds has been cleared up :-)

That might be so, Eccles; however the question remains as to whether or not the blinds will fit into the cabin bag.
vulcan, it's often to do with whether the bags will actually fit in the overhead lockers and still allow them to be shut.
easyjet are currently guaranteeing that a smaller size cabin bag WILL go on board with you, but a slightly larger one may be put in the hold if all the overhead lockers are full. 50 cms (not inches) is the former size, 56 cms the larger. http://www.easyjet.com/en/planning/cabin-baggage
