I remember the last time such an appeal was mooted Zionist supporters vetoed the idea.

I am not aware of one Sandy - but I sure don't mind contributing - but when the war was on with the Kurds - I donated money over the phone and it was 6 months before it was taken out of my account.
Red Cross, Oxfam, Muslim Aid and Islamic Relief all are advertising appeals for Gaza at the moment - available on-line. The TV reports show the Red Crescent (Middle Eastern version of the Red Cross) on site too.

It would not be an Appeal that would appeal to me!
How are they getting aid in, Sandy?

Their airport was bombed within weeks of completion (years ago), their sea port is blockaded. Via the Egyptian border maybe?

They are reduced to tunneling in the earth like moles. They might get much needed aid in through them.
Egypt enforces the blockade to the same extent as the Israeli's:

Furthermore, Hamas levies any food brought in to Gaza via tunnels, thus penalising its own citizens.
My post was in reply to Hypognosis's query.
I am not sure about Oxfam - if I manage to crawl out of my bed and get into the shop tomorrow I will check and see what they say.

It is going to be difficult for the rest of the world to give aid without being seen to take sides. This situation has been going on for so long and the people have suffered so much.

It is a situation that will take decades to resolve - if ever. It is so sad that in 2014 we are still killing each other over land/power/politics/religion.

Thanks, Chilldoubt.

I wasn't aware of any Egypt/Hamas rivalry (or it got lost in the flood of other information). I can't even begin to speculate as to why this may be.

Last I recall Egypt was causing anger in some circles by (allegedly) sending materials down the tunnels which were of potential use to the rocket makers. Why the change of heart?
are you not well wolfie.
Chris - thanks. When I am in the shop on a Monday I do the accounts (not allowed to say "cook the books"). I didn't have time to read any bulletins.

JJ - I am not good when I have to get up early. I think that it's all the droughts that my doctor gives me that makes me feel so I'll. But if I was well I would have to get a job.

Anyway - I am off to bed. Sleep well folks.

When The Muslim Brotherhood held power briefly in Egypt they were probably sympathetic to Hamas. Not that the military is in power again they'll be looking to maintaining their aid from America and won't want to rock the boat.
Egypt getting aid from USA is news to me as well. Was it a front-page item or tucked away on the pages where few care to look?

As far as the BBC handling, maybe it was only mentioned in passing and not the nub of a report in its own right. I'll google to see what they've got.
