I have just taken outside a tiny, tiny chestnut brown spider with a very distinctive white spot on it's back - it's legs were quite long for it's size and didn't fan out straight they were arched so that the body was lower than the arch in the legs (if that makes sense!). I tried to identify it on line but no luck. Be grateful for any information - it really was very pretty.

There are about 700 species of spider in the UK so this could be difficult without a picture. Also males are often different and very much smaller than females. Any chance it's still around where you could get a snap of it?

No chance at all - it was tiny, tiny tiny. Pity because I would love to have identified it. Thanks for the answer Milvus.
Hope its not the 'false widow' thats been much in the news lately, apparently spreading throughout the southern half of England and into wales.
If it was a false widow it would look like this

Is this your spider?
I remember being terrified by one as a child around forty years ago, so I'm not sure they're that new. No-one would believe me when I said it had a skull on its back.
It was much bigger than the one in the image provided though.

Not my spider thank goodness - mine was a different shape with the very distinctive perfect white spot on it's back.
