Why can't perpetrators of female genital mutilation not be prosecuted under the perfectly good laws already in place which deal with grievous bodily harm ?

mushroom; //so how can it be right to legislate against a particular practice because we find it distasteful?//
"Distasteful" !!! it's absolutely barbaric. Legislation is there for the same reason as it is there to protect people from being Hanged, drawn and quartered, a once common practice in Merrie England.
I've got no problems at all the Diwali, the Festival of Light, Eid, Passover or any other religious celebration that doesn't cause harm.

I don't even object to the locals here clogging the roads with their trotters. Well, I might mutter under my breath when I'm in a rush

Most girls don't have any say in the matter, they certainly don't give permission, it just happens.

I saw that interview, ummm - one woman said that as a child she was looking forward to it, to be accepted into the community as a woman :-(
"why hasn't someone been prosecuted during the last 11 years since the act I wonder.".

Have a guess ! (Although I recall one person was charged earlier this year).
The last thing that should happen is victims of this procedure being further traumatised by the law.

Or not being taken to the hospital or doctor for any illness or injury not related to FGM because the parents are frightened of being found out and reported.

The prevention of FGM AND the protection of girls who have already had this procedure must be equally important.

Two people arrested in London on suspicion of conspiracy to commit FGM 26/07/14

o.l. ; That looks like good news indeed, and as I say in the OP, the laws already seem to exist, all that is needed is enforcement.
Is it possible to prosecute a person for conspiracy to commit GBH before the GBH has occurred?
I think that is one of the reasons for the new law.
If the person that takes a child out of this country for FGM & is found guilty of the offence, that person should be deported, no matter how long they have been in this country.
Raping young girls damages the cervix; do paedophiles get charged with GBH in addition to other crimes?

It's difficult to talk about "perfectly good laws" when talking about this sort of thing?
"the laws already seem to exist, all that is needed is enforcement."

Khandro, we have to be mindful of the difficulties for the police identifying / detecting FGM offending, which is what current government is looking at however it is correct the laws are already there in place but law enforcement agencies and other authorities here in the UK have been unwilling / prevented from tackling these appalling offences from fear of being branded “racist -phobic' etc maintained principally by the massive and counter-productive irresponsible name calling left-wing racism industry.

Even more concerning is the failure in dealing with the racist and extremely brutal sex-slave trade and the systematic grooming gang phenomenon, particularly over the last decade, of young white girls and young non-muslim girls by mainly muslim male gangs.(one major defining feature of this crime is the ethnic/cultural homogeneity of the gang members, and the refusal of other members of their community to speak out about them or to condemn them). Political correctness and allegations of racism / phobia's etc has been used to make sure that people didn't speak about these serious crimes basically enabling the perpetrators free to brutally sexually abuse girls on an industrial scale, usually as young as 11 yrs old.

Its a very very disturbing situation which hopefully will be fully exposed in due course along with political activists / authorities who allowed and covered up some of the most brutal offences against children here in the UK in recent times.

Huge subject.
Just out of interest, there are very significant findings / similarities between offending in UK & t he Netherlands.

The Grooming Gang Phenomenon

". .. . . .but in 2012 Andrew Norfolk, a principal journalist for The Times, stated “when we first started to investigate this 2 years ago, no-one [from the child-care professions] would speak to us.”

When he testified before parliament, he said that after he published his analysis of the pattern of exploitation in January 2011, showing that Muslim men were massively over-represented as the perpetrators, suddenly he was contacted by so many people who had refused to speak to me before. When you have a Director of Children’s Services ringing and saying,
“My staff are jumping for joy in the office today because finally somebody has said what we have not felt able to say, and when you have very senior police officers saying exactly the same.

They were “terrorised”by political correctness and multiculturalism".

Here is the initial response to the "Stop FGM in the UK Now" e-petition (closed a few weeks ago)
This and previous governments are *** scared of upsetting these people, It's about time the governments said enough is enough, this is the UK if you do not like the rules, there are many airports around the UK that you can use, do not dictate to us, you either abide by the UK rule or get out. " But will we?
//why hasn't someone been prosecuted during the last 11 years since the act I wonder. //

Because FGM a cultural/religious practice and political correctness has been allowed to take precedence over common sense and decent human ethics.
TWR...you're talking rubbish. It's already illegal here. The Government is not *** scared of anyone.
