When I moved to London aged 17 I went in to a fish shop and asked for a piece of Cod no chips. He said you want a cod, no said I just a piece of it. He rolled his eyes and gave me the fish. When I got home I was appalled that the fish still had skin inside the batter. I took it back. In Yorkshire the fish is skinned, apparently not in London.

Always fish and chips in this part of Sheffield; choice of cod or haddock. //Does tha wanna spice// in Barnsley ;-)
In Keighley, ask for 'fish and chips' and you get one of those horrid, battered reformed wedge shaped piece of 'fish' found in bargain shops freezers.

If you want proper fish and chips you have to ask for a special.
And up here to ask for scallops would not mean seafood but the crispy left over bits of fried potato.
In the West Mids a scallop is a thick, round slice of potato battered and deep fried.
That is correct, hc4361. And very nice they are to.
