This woman is evil through and through, she knew exactly what she was doing, she systematically beat and punched her young defenceless son until she finally killed him.
Then she put his little body in a suitcase, and dumped it behind her sister's house 20 miles away, then told the police he had disappeared, causing the police and her fellow residents to conduct a two day search.
This evil *** should rot in jail.

No the death of her child, and persons making excuses for her evil crime is the tragedy.
I wonder if there would be a totally different attitude from those who seem to feel sorry for her, had it had been the father who had punched his son until he was dead?

When the wee boy was reported as missing it didn't seem right - it didn't seem like something a lad of his age would be able to orchestrate.
When his body was found I hoped that it had been an accident, his mother then panicked and hid the body. I usually try to think the best of people.
But now that the story is out I have no pity for the mother. The little boy was sick and for that she beat him over a period of time - she didn't even consider getting him any medical attention.
People who are mentally ill (me included) don't think logically when they are unwell and I doubt that she would have managed to hide the body and then report the fact that he was 'missing' to the police.
If her own mother reported her to child services/social work it must have been bad.
All of this will impact on the other children - to know that their own mother hated Mikaeel so much that she killed him. I wish the children well.

Aog, I apologise- I genuinely hadn't even realised the tragedy of his death was up for debate. I had thought it went without saying, but obviously not.
There is a huge difference between evil and ill and it is not clear here what the cause was. From her history-and the way she asked for help because of her feelings towards him, I'm not convinced it was completely within her control.
Of course, it's a tragedy either way.

Excuse? How does that work, then? All it does is determines the cause- which is essential if there is going to be any chance of preventing future incidents. If it turns out that treatment is going to be more effective than punishment, it's important to know that. Either way, she is not going to be left in prison to rot- she will be released at some point. We have to think ahead a bit further than a kneejerk wish for revenge. The "good versus evil" is far too simplistic most of the time. It's possible to have two victims of a situation, even if differing degrees.
I have no idea what went through her mind, Naomi, i just don't understand it. Why is the comparison necessary though? It doesn't help the little boy, we can only attempt to prevent her ever doing it again. It's interesting that quite a few people seem to see psychiatric treatment as a soft option, "excusing" her or letting her off.
I think just the opposite- she appears unstable and highly dangerous and with her mindset, i would not feel happy about her being released-at any point. I think she needs a lot of intervention for the sake of potential future victims. Prison may not be a bed of roses (I don't know), but I think she needs more than "just prison"- and not for revenge, but for everybody's sake.

Sometimes the mental health card IS played as an excuse though. If you've read Wicked Beyond Belief about the Yorkshire Ripper there does seem to be evidence that he used the "voices in my head" defence as a way of getting a cushy sentence in a secure mental hospital, rather than prison.
I'm not comparing the two cases. It's just it seems its trotted out all the time now.
