I am putting together spreadsheet for first time in years. How do I shade the different columns in different shades of grey?

You've not told us which program you're using, so I'll have to assume that it's Excel.

Hiya, Highlight the section you want, then at the top toolbar there is a 'Bucket' symbol which looks like it is tipping. Click on this, select your colour & hey presto :o)
You're looking for the "format cell" edit menu option.
What version of office?

Latter version then the option to format as a table will be your friend...
I highlight the column of cells, then click on the Theme Colour button (on my version of Excel) and click on the one I want.
