(I used to to have a series overview bookmarked online, but that's long since been lost).
The TV series ran for two seasons in the early to mid 70's on UK TV and I believe was titled after the protagonist's surname. Its creator was primarily a playwright given to experimentation. The actor was blond and seemed to be in his 30s.

The opening titles had him running away from a car's headlights in a traffic tunnel.

The hero was a career criminal who was on the run from mob associates who had betrayed him and marked him for death. He is offered refuge by a sympathetic prostitute (whose advances he politely rebuffs), only for her to be killed by his enemies. This event halts his flight and he determines to take the battle to his enemies (while also evading capture by the police). The series ran on for two seasons but the hero dies one or two episodes before season's end with the plot resolving itself without him.

It sounds a bit like 'Gangsters' with the late Maurice Colbourne

The opening titles you describe ring a bell, but I'm not sure if its this or not. I know there was a strip club in it, MC died near the end and a lot was set around the canals and boats of Birmingham. Ring any bells?
