Is there any point in applying for one of these if you've bought travel insurance?

Thanks for any replies

Yes, EHIC is a must, insurance not a requirement but ought to be made one as a matter of law really.
Yes, because it could cover you (depnding on where you are going) for minor mishaps without having to go through all the hassle involved in an insurance claim.

Thanks, I'll apply for them now then.
Don't pay for them, they are free.

Some web sites do try to charge you for getting one.
I was about to mention the same as VHG.
Here is the site you need:

Thank you all, I did it on the official website.

The cards should be with me within 10 days. Perhaps the passport office should take some tips ;)
Just an additional point:
It's no use having an EHIC if you've not got it with you when you arrive at a hospital.

For example, if you fall and break your wrist, the local casualty unit will put it in a pot and then present you with a bill, which must be paid before you leave the hospital. If you show them your EHIC that bill will be waived but that won't be possible if you've left the card in your hotel room. ALWAYS CARRY IT WITH YOU (e.g. in your wallet or purse).

Thanks Chris, I didn't know that. One more thing to worry about on a 'relaxing' holiday' lol
As Chris says make sure you are taken to/go to a public hospital not a private one.
