I have just switched on a small lamp which failed to work. I assume the bulb has gone but when I removed it instead of rattling it is just completely black.

I've never seen this happen before....is it just a normal thing for a bulb to do rather than ping and go out when switched on?

Anne, policemen too please
Oh gawd, here we go again, gness there isn't much room left in this shed.
Once had to explain to five of them in my bedroom where there was a fire burning in the adjacent field. Only vantage point. Quite enjoyed that.

Long explanation, Daisy?....☺
I remember that Anne, you had a great time.
Lived alone in a house which backed onto a field which in turn was next to a church. There had been a few incidents of vandalism against the church and other fires lit in the area. Was not sleeping well at the time and smelled the smoke and heard the crackling, (slept with windows open). Dialled 999 as instructed by local press. Managed to find my dressing gown by the time the Fire Brigade arrived. Only vantage point of the fire was from my bedroom. Good job I had plenty of coffee!

Memorable evening, Daisy..... ;-)
Probably the filament vaporised and coated the inside.
Oh, I thought tungsten oxide was white
but in wiki - I read taht it can have a few oxidation states

and is bronze or yellow

I thought the metal itself had vapourised rather than pinged.
