// I wish to say this to those who are constantly wishing for an end to religion, can you ever see an end to religion per-se? If England ceases to be a Christian country, which this report says could happen in 16 years time, would you be happy to see it become a Muslim country? // No. Because Islam is another religion. We should not be governed by clerics. We should...

Well warning came on screen, but I have ignored it and things seem O.K.

the usual suspects spats, i am glad i am an atheist, i am merely stating
what Cameron has said, however we are in danger of going away from Christianity, no bad thing, onto something worse, guess what that could be, the more people of faiths descend on Britain the more their ideologies will dominate, if you think that's a good thing then say so. I don't any religion being dominant, however Islam is very high on my list of don't want, no matter how many happy, moderate Muslims we have, no good in dumping Christianity to take up a worse model
No one is asking anyone to stop being a Christian. We are not calling for it to be banned or replaced.
We just want Christians to stop interfering in matters of State. They should run their churches and not get involved in making laws and imposing their beliefs on us.
Be careful Gromit...you are being a trifle too rational and you are making too much common sense, and that isn't always popular on AB !

You are right though.
Question Author
thing is Gromit, even i know that the state and church are historically interlinked, CofE, simplistically the deal that good old Henry made back in the day, so our head of state is the Queen, defender of the faith, being Christianity, i know Charles wants Defender of the Faiths, but that is a stretch too far. Our laws are also interlinked, much of our way of life is interlinked, and even if people put jedi on their census form, many will for the sake of something to add, or be truthful when designating their faith as Christian, CofE. I attended church school, brownies, girl guides, all church related activities and i bet you a pound to a penny so did many, boys usually cubs, scouts, boys life brigade, we can't totally disassociate ourselves from the church because its been part and parcel of our culture, and British life. Now we would surely have to junk the whole lot, church, establishment, parliament, because they too are part and parcel of life in Britain, principles of law, all tied up in one way or another with the church. If we don't want any form of religion, that is not going to happen, too many follow Islam, too many follow other faiths, you are suggesting that they get on with preaching, but nothing else, how can that possibly work.

// Never a day dawns that I am not glad I abandoned all that silly nonsense and embraced atheism !//
How exactly does your gladness manifest itself? It seems to me that the replacement of a transcendent God by an omnipotent humanity alters surprisingly little. Yes, you can now shop on Sunday, but there is still a metaphysical centre to the world which unaffected by your new-born sovereignty.
Question Author
i wished i understood that ^^^
emmie..you seem to have a fixation about Islam. Not sure why ? They represent a very small part of Britain...why are so afraid of them ?
Question Author
i would take all religions out of educational establishments, school, uni, they do not have a place in them.

/// I am as true a Brit as you AOG, we just think and debate differently.
Sincerest Regards, ///

So nice to debate with a true British gentleman.

Kind regards A O G
Question Author
you know they have 5 times more adherent than Jews, Judaism
who incidentally have had their fair share of travails in the past in Britain,
according to records they are a quarter million strong, whilst Islam is growing at an alarming rate, last count 2 million, or more, you want to ditch Christianity, whilst many want to adopt the ways of Islam, not much of a trade off.
Khandro..my contribution to naomi's post on Saturday afternoon in the Religion and Spirituality section says it all. And my "conversion" to Atheism is hardly new, as you can see if you read my reply. I am just glad that I can make my own mind up about important issues like abortion, same-sex marriages, etc, without having to seek the answer in some old writings, or in the pontifications from some self-important official, like the Pope or Arch Bishop of Canterbury.
Question Author
mikey, because i think they are one of the most dangerous religions in the world, they are fractured, split along sectarian lines, every bit as bad as catholic and protestant, i would say worse, and the fact remains that more who settle in Britain from the sub continent, will bring this ideology along with them, strange that Hindu, Sikh rarely get a mention in the news, not so those who follow Islam, their own countries in uproar, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, now we have this on our doorstep
There is no evidence at all that Islam with replace Christianity in Britain naomi.
AOG " One is not forced to worship "
So what do you call the rule in state schools that an act of communal worship
MUST take place every day.

IMO No religion should be taught in state funded schools except as a part of history. If parents want religion then let them pay privately and separately for it, well away from mainstream education.

As for David Cameron and Tony Blair I don't trust either of them . Their religious beliefs IMO warps their judgement when viewing the world as it really is. I think Athest Ed Milliband would make a much better leader if he had the guts to dump the unions and go it alone .
Well spoken Gromit & mikey etc,
Atheism is not a crusade to convert anyone.
I wish all believers well but I just hope they are wrong - the idea of spending eternity with clip-on wings and Cameron is frightening (you need wings to fly into the sky but now for some reason cosmologists say heaven and hell are not there). Religions are so confusing, which of the thousands are right, I wonder:)
