Hi,

My 15 year old daughter works approx 12-14 hours a week in a local pub as a waitress. She's still at school (she leaves in 2 weeks) and not 16 until August.

She earns £4.50 an hour and usually brings home around £60 p/w

For the past two weeks, she's being paying tax, approx £10 a week. She has a tax code so my wife has just told me but not sure what it is.

Firstly, is she earning enough to pay tax ? secondly, if she shouldn't be paying tax yet, how do we go about getting it back.

any other info greatly appreciated

Thanks

No, she is not earning enough to pay tax. Her employer may have been told by the Revenue to deduct tax at the Basic Rate (20%) from all her earnings meaning on £60 she will be stopped £12.

She should contact the Inland Revenue to get them to remove the "BR" stipulation from the information they have provided to her employers. She should have a tax code of 1000, meaning she can earn £10,000 in a year before tax is payable. If this is done her overpaid tax should be returned to her via the empoloyer's PAYE system.
Yes- contact HMRC. She will get the tax back
