I now find myself with more than £85K with them. I believe the organisation is reasonably well run and not likely to fail but would like to hear from someone with more experience in these matters.

It's a solid building society. If it's not safe I don't know what is. I should add that I don't have any great experience in financial matters.

Put the surplus in to another account just to put your mind at rest.
^ the 'another account' should be with an institution that's not classed as coming under the same group
So not the Cheshire, nor the Derbyshire nor Dunfermline building societies :)
This is all BS anyway if it ever got to the stage where a big high st presence was threatened the governement would step in basically because if they did not the domino effect would transport is back to the dark ages. No government would ever let it get to the stage where the masses want their money out. For one thing the banks don't have it anyway. Nationwide, like any significant high st money depository is as safe as it can be.
There's no indication that it's not safe, BOP.
Phew, that's a relief!
