yes what a great time for radio !
we up here had radio 270 which you could get a boat ride out from bridlington to the ship and shout hello to the crew on board loved it. when it was rough weather the records used to go slower then faster sometimes jump a groove,
fabulous !
Boxtops - yes, I saw it in the cinema and have it on DVD. Thanks for the link. There is a book that was written by an engineer on Radio Caroline. It`s called Last of the Pirates by Bob Noakes. A lot of it is techie stuff about their transmittors but it`s quite interesting. I think some of the staff were "off their heads" a lot of the time, according to the book. My local radio station (Radio Jackie) started off as a pirate radio station and managed to become legit. I was lucky enough to go into the studio and see the DJ and he said they have people there who used to work on Radio Caroline. I`ve always been fascinated by radio and would love to work on a radio station if I didn`t do my job.
i remember well when they had all to shut down .radio 270 which we had on was giving thanks to all our support, lots of cars were lined up of bridlington bay shinning their headlights out to sea for them, the crew were crying WE were crying sat around the radio ,when they finally played the national anthem and it finished it was like someone had died,
Ivor - the lucky thing about Radio Caroline was that it was anchored in international waters so they were able to continue. I remember when they broke anchor in a storm and were washed ashore. The occupants were arrested.
