It was part tactics, bernie - push them out wide and make them go further, so wide that Oxford would have been in quieter water as to the following current.....it happens in all the races to some degree. The umpire had indicated enough times that Cambridge should head further to the Middlesex bank......

that would take away an element of the sport, canary, even though it's logical. Get hit by one of those blades and it could have been very serious - if that No 2 had fallen in the water, I hate to think what could have happened. If you remember the *** who swam out to the boats, they reckoned the carbon-fibre of them and their strength/thinness could have easily decapitated him.....
I can understand bernie, it's a bit like watching paint dry unless there is an incident. It's the combination of history, the rivalry, London and getting pished that is the appeal I guess. The worst sport for paint drying is netball in my book, followed by most swimming events, (esp synch swimming) and then boxing.
