I wonder if I could ask for help in regard to a problem I have with a 6 year old Dell Inspiron 530S that operates on Windows Vista.

The problem is this:-

When I switch on the tower unit the monitor shows the usual Microsoft green progress bar, but instead of seeing this progress bar for about the usual 6 or so movements, it disappears after just one and a few seconds later, I am presented with the usual blue password login screen. Unfortunately, before I can type in my password, this screen disappears after two seconds and also goes black.

I took the tower unit to A local computer IT solutions firm to have the machine checked. The unit was tested at their premises and was found to have a severe dust problem affecting the operation of the fan. This I was told prevented them getting any image on their monitor too. AFTER THE DUST WAS REMOVED IT (the computer) WORKED ON THEIR TEST BENCH. The following labour took place:-

Configuration
Carry out system maintenance including:
De-dust case interior including CPU heatsink.
Hard Disk maintenance
Scan for threats/viruses and removal of 17 objects found.
Check for hard disk errors and correct as required
Run Disk Clean and disk fragmenter
Delete unwanted/temporary files from temp and other folders
Registry maintenance
Download and install all Microsoft programme updates
Remove broken shortcuts
Upgrade system memory

Finally after previous agreement that the system needed speeding up a little, 2GB Matched Memory Module Kit was installed to increase the memory to 4GB.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be and, more importantly, what steps, preferably in "Idiot Guide" simplicity as I'm not tech savvy, that I need follow to solve the problem.

Your kind help would be most welcome.

The OP was confusing. Did you have this problem and the solutions firm thought they'd fixed it ? Or is this a new one unrelated to what they did ?

Could be anything. Sounds like it may be some competent getting warm and failing to me. Did they not run the PC for a while at the firm and check it was working well ?

Yes, the company operated my tower unit after the dust was removed from the fan/heatsink area on their own system and the problem did not recur. In other words, the screens remained in constant vision.

Now I've got the unit back home I reconnected all the wiring to monitor, mouse, keyboard etc etc and the problem still exists.
Has your system worked since being re-installed with your Monitor.?
If Not then your question is really one for the Repairers.

Please do Not think I am being dismissive of matters.
I would like to help if possible and as a starter would ask if you are able to use it to contact AnswerBank. It could be more to do with your Monitor than Computer.

Hans.
The only odd ones out are your monitor and I would presume your monitor cable.

Re-check these, have you another monitor you could try?

Many thanks for your kind responses.

I have now had renewed contact with the repairing engineer and he has asked me to take the monitor and associated cabling to his premises first thing tomorrow and he will attend to the matter on a 'while U wait' basis

I have a mind to take the tower and all associated tower cabling connexions as well just to make doubly certain that I leave his premises fully satisfied that my tower and monitor are working properly before I leave!!
