I've bought an auction lot of wood-carving / turning chisels. Among them is a set of very handsome ebony-handled chisels bearing the stamp PHILIPS LIVERPOOL. I've been unable to track this firm down, or, indeed, any other examples of these tools on e-bay. Can anybody enlighten me with a bit of the history? It may not even be Liverpool in England.

Perhaps the stamped "PHILIPS LIVERPOOL" is what is known as a private label, meaning that the tools were made by a company for another business by the name of Philips. For example, I have an old pocket watch which is marked on the dial "FELT BROTHERS TORONTO". The watch was made by a major watch making company as advertising for the Felt's business.
Or maybe Philips was the original owner of the tools and they were marked in case they got lost or borrowed
Turast, did either of theses answers help? Did you find any more information regarding the tools? Are you still around?

Thank you for trying, but neither of the answers helped really, I'm sorry. From experience, it is definitely a manufacturer's mark, and normally they can simply be traced by using Google. I'm convinced there must be somebody out there who knows of this manufacturer, but, so far, I've come up with a big fat zero. I'll put feelers out every couple of weeks.
