Have managed to get rust marks on a bath towel (from soaking cooker parts in bath!) Have tried soaking in Vanish but that didn't work - would be grateful for any ideas please.

Stain Devils do a rust stain remover for fabrics. Try your local hardware shop. I used to use oxalic acid powder mixed with a little water. That works fine, but most chemists don't stock it any more. (Poisonous!)

You need something mildly acidic to dissolve the iron compounds....lemon juice or vinegar. Hope the Vanish hasn't altered or set the stain.
