Coming out of Canvey Island the other day, my Garmin tried to take me the wrong way round Sadler's Farm roundabout.

I never follow it blindly.

I ALWAYS USE MY SATNAV IN CONJUNCTION WITH A MAP, GIVING ME A GOOD CLUE AS TO WHERE I SHOULD BE HEADING. EG LEEDS CASTLE IS NOT UP THE M1. IT IS BRILLIANT FOR TAKING ME TO AN ADDRESS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE OFF THE BEATEN TRACK.

Voted yes, never failed me yet(in UK and Europe). It's a Navman, if that helps anyone who is agonising over which make to buy.

I have a good idea where I'm going in the first place and only use the satnav to find a specific address in an unfamiliar town. So if it sends me off on a tangent I know something is wrong. Not like the ambulance driver taking a patient home from a central London hospital who by mistake entered SK17 instead of SE17 into his satnav, and was heading up the M6 past Knutsford in Cheshire before the penny dropped that something wasn't quite right.

We called our sat-nav Useless. We tried it out on a well know route to see if it was the one that the sat-nav would give us. The sat-nav would have added another 15 minutes to our journey if we had followed it. I could swear that 'The voice' was getting a bit frustrated when we ignored her commands.

I trust it to be what it is which is a machine under my control, offering me advice which I can accept or refuse.

What is wrong with planning a journey with a raod map? They are cheaper, and, therefore, more cost effective.

they're ok for the last half a mile of a journey if dont have street map.

a few years ok i did a bit of taxi driving and had to go to Oxted in Surrey - miles away from where I live. The satnav sent me (and my fare) down the smallest unclassified road which had bollards blocking the road half way down.
I had to turn around and go about 3 miles to get to the other side! They dont allow for real life incoveniences such as this.

I live in a city my sat nav can find my, very long street, but it can't find my house.

There ought to be another option which says "I still use a paper map" :-)

I don't drive but whenever I've been with someone who does who uses them I think they're great. However one of my best mates sat navs recently sent us down some very pretty but indirect country roads in Kent. I don't think it was the sat navs fault tho...

satnavs will always get you where you want to go. always.

however, they may sometimes take you an strange or unnecessary route.

but they will not get you lost - unless your map software is very very old and the area didn't exist then...

ours takes us some unexpected routes but when we check afterward it's always been right
