I have a montana climatis that I want to plant so it will eventually hide most of the oil tank, should I plant it on the sunny side or the shady side so that it climbs up to get to the sun which would be the best please?

Clematis prefer a cool root run. Feet in the shade, head in the sun is the usual mantra when planting clematis. Also, plant a couple of inches deeper in the soil than it is in the pot.

we've got clematis montana running riot over our shed - the root is at the side of the shed which doesn't get the sun.

thank you both, its now planted on the shady side, just in time to catch a nice shower, its been dry here for weeks so a bit of rain is really welcome.
I would water until it shows signs of new growth....
