Well there it was swimming in the toilet bowl this morning ( giving a friendly wave ) a three inch red worm. My OH shouted to me and while we watched the bloody thing we neither had poohed this morning. Now the boy is still abed...late night.... None of us have any other symptoms no itchy butts, poorly tums, do we need the doctors or can we buy over the counter medicines ? Do we all need treatment as we have no idea who left the worm ? TIA.

Not being funny but was it a garden-type (earth)worm?

Itchy butts are symptoms of tiny threadworms anyway. Can't have come from someone's bowel surely?
Well it does not sound like threadworms, they are white and literally thready - how odd.
Is the boy prone to pranks ?
do you have plants in your bathroom does sound like an earthworm
Could it have com from elsewhere, sewer system/ there are a few othe posts online suggesting that;

A worm without poo sounds very unlikely.

Are you sure it's not an earthworm? Which apparently can crawl up pipework, especially after rain.

And no, im not kidding.

Well you know...it did look like an earthworm......ha the boy has just got up and freaked out !!! No he is not responsible for joking. !
Intestinal worms tend to be white. Are you sure it hasn`t come from somewhere else?
Doesn't sound like a worm from a human. Think yoga is right.

Found this on the web:

red worms are common where a drain or sewer has cracked or broken. Usually they live in the wet ground, where you find them when you dig out to repair.
We had a toad in our toilet earlier this year!!
sorry, didn't notice Yoga has said earth worm first.
Earthworm or erseworm, that's the question.

Well it looks like the ones in the link....thanks Chelle.
If it`s like the ones in the link, I`ve seen worms like that before (living in water). Can`t think where but definitely have.
It could have been a leech.

No big deal.
You're welcome flump
My first instinct wouldnt be "Its come from one of us!"
I would assume in the first instance it has come from somewhere else, perhaps as suggested above. If none of the household have symptoms, dont obsess over it. If you become symptomatic (bad stomach, irritation) or find another worm, seek medical advice then....

Indeed jd, I was amazed at the thing.....none of us are any worse than usual. My abdomen is always upset, the nature of my illness. My OH has big lumps of his bowel missing ......not one of us has had as much as an itch ...we shall wait and see.
