Some hints on the following would be appreciated.

It is only what I have read of the compilers wishes and may well be wrong.
Ask away grumpy. Any and all questions are welcome here.
Snooker. Don't know if it was the most recent but in 1999 reigning champion John Higgins was beaten by Mark Williams after rain stopped play. Williams was beaten in the final by another Scot.
The tennis one might be Antonov ( Russian aircraft Co. ) anagram of Novotna (Jana) but I have no idea who she beat who was African born .
Completely confused but Lawrence of Arabia springs to mind for the first part of the question.
