Amazon has just reminded me that the kindle fire is hopping over to the UK shortly:

Anyone had a go with one, or pre-ordered one already?

I bought a Kobo for £49.99 from Asda a few months ago. Think I'll give that to my mum and buy myself a Kindle Fire HD.

Not interested in one. They are selling it cheaply to lock buyers in to Amazon for ebooks, music and film downloads.
A good example is that the Kindle does not allow free ebook downloads from the public libraries. I prefer choice and there will be others out in a similar price bracket.
If you don't want adverts on the splash screen you can opt out by paying around £15.

Why have you chosen the Fire in preference to any other tablet, daffy?

I've been put in charge of the Kobo promotion at work and they are launching 3 new models in october, they are a far superior range to the kobo and open platform which means not stuck with amazon, plus alot bigger capacity and alot more setting options, but still not bought one myself, might get a good deal on the ex-display kobo touch we are taking off show though, oir even the Vox, which is like a small tablet.

I'd prefer the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" or the Google Nexus running Jelly Bean.

hc4361 - and I'll be plumping for a Windows 8 Tablet. It's just different requirements for different people. Some people just want quick and seamless access to amazon/facebook/some light web-browsing without the fuss of a "straight" android tab.

Is it? Would you like to quantify that in some way?

I don't like the BB playbook very much.

HC - I'm looking forward to what Nokia will offer. If it looks good, and W8 RT doesn't look dire, I'm in.

From what I've played with on Windows 8 for a desktop, it's quite excellent :)
