Speeding awareness

I attended a speed awareness course in April and today I have been caught doing 35 in a 30, I have been told because its a short tome since the course I will now recieve the points from April. Does anybody know if this is correct??

My copy of the Highway code, published by the AA is dated 2008. It gives exactly the same stoppage distance for 30mph, 75 feet, as does The Department of Transport manual for driving dated 1979 and the Police drivers manual, undated but bought same time as the DoT manual. I would suggest braking efficiency has improved during the 29 years between publication dates.

But you have to set it at the level of the worst breaking efficiency - there are still some people driving vehicles that are 29 years old.

As I mentioned the study by Ashton and Mackay is 30 years old.

There is a much more recent study from the Department of Transport by a guy called D.C Richards of two years ago incorporating data from the above research and came to the following conclusions:

Risk of fatality increases SLOWLY with impact speeds approaching 30 mph BUT above 30mph the risk of fatality increases RAPIDLY.
Between 30 mph-40 mph the mortality rates increase by a figure between '.5 and 5.5 times.

Think it's confirmed that OP will not get points from the time he's already been caught and done the course. While I don't condone speeding I'd guess that nearly everyone who drives daily, like me, will break the speed limit, even inadvertently, at some point most days.

I'm a Sales Rep and totally agree with you Prudie. Only yesterday I was driving down the A1 at approx 70-75 mph, I looked in my rear view mirror and saw this complete moron belting toward me, and, as I was overtaking various HGV's at the time, there was no way that I could pull in and let him go.

Because of this, I obviously wasn't driving fast enough for him, when he did eventually overtake me, I was on the receipt of a vile look and a certain finger "wave"...

He belted off, must have been going a good 80+ mph... It's people like him that gives good drivers a bad name and it makes me sooooo cross!

Incidentally, nobody expects you to believe Highway Code braking distances. Instead,stopping time and braking distance were shown on the speed awareness course I went on. They had a film showing a police driver in an ordinary car braking at various speeds, so we could see the different speeds of impact if 30 mph was exceeded by different amounts, and the distances required to brake at the different speeds.
Don't think they told us that points avoided would be revived. Quite the opposite! Once we had completed the course satisfactorily there were no points to revive: only the points already on the licence could be counted in future. That was the whole reason for taking the course. But you don't get the option of another course if you speed again soon after completing one.

He got caught
he opted for the course instead of the points
He got caught again
He'll get points for this second time - but will they add the points for the first time, too?

er Prudie - I have NEVER broken the speed limit in over 40 years of driving. I have driven many different vehicles up to 7.5 ton lorries, and a motorbike. It is just not necessary.
