Roly is now eating - all is right with the world! Got him up last Sunday, much later than normal due to the cold weather and put him under his special lamp and now he's been tempted (finally) with crispy lettce, cucumber and a juicy strawberry. Many thanks to all who offered advice and their own experiences. Keeping a tortoise is not as easy as some might think, even after 30 years. Off to Sainsburys tomorrow for more tempting food. Hurray!

Hurrah for Roly, I'm glad he's OK :-)
I am a 'mammal girl' but read your last post with interest. I thought that 30 years was a good age, but Pete the Vet on facebook has taken a picture of a 70 year old that turned up at their surgery with anorexia after hibernation.

Pete also answered this question in the Telegraph the other day http://www.telegraph....and-a-lonely-dog.html

I wish you and Roly many happy years together - unless you want a swap? Your tortoise for two adorable sibling felines. They are no trouble at all and love each other to bits. ;-)
victor has been on the march this week looking for dandelions first time hes been active since he woke up about a month ago ,glad yours is eating now
We look after our neighbours tortoise when they are away, and he eats cat food mixed with strawberry jam from a spoon. how He ever got into this diet I cannot imagine, but He is 30 years old and a character. He always looks up to see who is feeding him, and if He hears the garden gate left open ( I think He knows the sound of the catch when it's shut) He heads for it to make a break for freedom, He almost runs the 20 feet. He also tries to get through the bars on the gate by turning sideways and pushing himself forward, but he is too large to get through. glad yours is o.k. coming out of hibernation, we are still waiting for the neighbours to emerge.

Why they always want to escape beats me. Must be the explorer in them. Roly can get his head under the gate but cannot understand why the rest of him won't fit under! They are very clever creatures.
