I read somewhere recently that there is to be a large rise in postal costs in UK. My husband has just been told by someone in a post office that the Royal Mail is trying to raise money and will then be selling the service. I presume the rise will be in April 2012, but I want to buy a few books of stamps before they go up. Does anyone have any more info ?

There is talk of first class going up to 65p and second class to 47p!!
Well a stamp still costs me less than delivering the letter or package myself. When the commercial area was opened up to competition, and thus cross subsidy became difficult to sustain, it was inevitable prices would rise. If there really is a desire to sell it off, and they seem to want to privatise everything these days, then the true cost of an activity has to reflect the price charged. Otherwise potential buyers will not have a good indication of whether the business is viable or not. That said when things are privatised they seem to still attract public money anyway.
