So, Atheist society at UCL used a Jesus and Mo cartoon on a facebook page to advertise a knees up. Now, following complaints to UCL student union by the Muslim society, they have been asked by the student union to remove the cartoon.

Question : Ridiculous overreaction or striking a blow for religious respect?

Completely loopy and paranoid as well as irrational. Since no pictures of mohammed exists his appearence is unknown, so any graphic depiction of him is speculative. It could be argued that calling any image mohammed is offensive, but would calling a packet of cornflakes mohammed be offensive There are many arabs called mohammed but that is fine with moslems though it could be argued that naming someone mohammed is more offensive than a cartoon of mohammed. I don't see why a religion is any more deserving of respect than any other organisation and many are probably a lot less deserving than some non-religious organisations.
Personally whilst I am all for tolerance and trying to keep the peace with folks of all religious persuasions, I'd have left the fecking cartoons up.
I haven’t looked at the links but I get the gist.

All religion is a matter of opinion. Those following any particular religion should be prepared to have their opinion challenged or ridiculed. It’s no big deal. I have opinions on many topics (though none on any religion) and I am quite prepared t have those opinions attacked, ridiculed and made light of. Anybody who has strong views about their chosen belief should be sufficiently robust and secure to stand any criticism or ridicule that comes their way.

Unfortunately many are not.
Ridiculing people and organisations that take themselves too seriously is a long standing British tradition that has been in existence far longer than islam or christianity so should be preserved and enshrined in our virtual constitution
I understand both sides of this sort of argument, but my opinion falls over the line into the 'one should be able to take a little ribbing without getting hot under the collar' side. But of course it is a cultural thing as to whether to take such offence or not.
Quite so jomifl and OG.

Unfortunately since the advent of our so-called “multicultural society” it has been decreed that just about the worst offence that can be committed (just above armed robbery and only just below murder) is to upset somebody.

The single culture of this country was that you got and gave a little bit of inoffensive offence as part of life’s rich tapestry. Everyone was fair game – English, Irish, Scots, Jews, Blacks, Whites, Chinese, Hindus, stammerers, deaf people, short sighted people, short people, fat people, the lot.

These days there is always someone ready to take offence on behalf of somebody else (strangely the targets of the banter themselves seem to take it in good heart). And the country is all the poorer for it.
Daft. Chances are that if Jesus and Mohammed had lived at the same time, they might have recognised the similarities in each other and what they were trying to do. The cartoons don't look offensive to me, but tolerant.
Intelligent minds forever repressed by irrational, humourless, medieval dogma. What a waste!
Naomi I have to take issue with you here, It is the intelligent minds that do the repressing from what I have seen.. :-)
Is 'Mo' an abbreviation for the name of the prophet, Mohammed, (pbuh)? The society members at UCL must be seeking the agnostic martyrs crown...
Jom, yes, you're probably right. ;o)

Night all. Sweet dreams. x
Sandy.. only an insane paranoid funamentalist could make a connection between a cartoon character called 'mo' and historical character called muhammed of unknown physiognomy.
"Mohammed and the Cartoons"

Sounds like a good name for a band.
Quite. Is it a representation of one of the 5 apostles called Moe?

Im pretty sure its meant as a representation of Mohammed ;)

I find it - ridiculous. frankly - that people can be so offended over what amounts to a piece of gentle lampooning. It also would seem that those who complained had to do a lot of work to become offended, since this was a specific facebook page for the atheist society.

Read SPs post today in the news section, about the pope and a muslim group essentially saying that homosexuality is either a threat to humanity, or from the muslims death threats and its the road to hell. Such intemperate language just serves to show that orthodox religion should be consigned to history.
I cannot imagine why a bunch of muslim fundamentalists want to prevent homosexuals from going to hell. Perhaps they are hoping to meet them later in heaven (nudge, nudge).
Apparently Mo got pretty hammed down the pbuh the other night.
Classic stuff. Brilliant.
I find all imagery of the Abrahamic religions offensive. I guess I should complain and of course they will remove it all from the internet.
try it beso... i guess most of the time a small amount of people complain about something and suddenly its all of them are offended....
