Some councils offer a handyman service (for a small fee) - or organisations like Age Concern might have volunteers able to help. Where do you live?
Check notices in your doctors or library.

Regarding the insulation, we had a knock on the door the other week from British Gas, who said they were doing it free for all their customers. You might not be with BG but perhaps others do the same.
can MacMillan advise you?

Hi postdog, we were offered loft insulation from "Warm front " but was told we could not use the loft for storage after, and as we store the usual "rubbish" up there, such as suit cases and memorabelia belonging to the children we chose not to go down that road, so we bought all the insulation to do it our selves. Then my hubby was diagnosed with cancer and cannot do the work. Boxtops we live in Milton Keynes.

Where abouts are you?
Macmillan offer grants. It may be worth ringing their free helpline.
Hi WHF ...
this is Milton Keynes Council Website .. Lower down the page it mentions 'Home Improvements' and mentions loft insulation. If you can't get the help through their website I would suggest phoning them .. there is a grey bar there with 'contact us' Click on that and there are phone numbers .. I'm sure someone will be able tohelp you from there.http://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/mk-soci
