how many people know this,it's in small print on your licence,
it has to be renewed every ten years at a £20 cost + a new passport style photo (more expense)
my friends just got his renewal notice, but why when ive got the old paper (no photo) type this does NOT need renewing, whats it for ?
what a way of profiteering by the dlvc.

its to update your pic.
I know I know.. I had to do mine last year - was gutted as I spent about a tenner trying to get a decent picture from one of those crappy booths too!!!

maybe so mcfluff but what about all the many tens of thousands like me who dont have a pic on the old paper type ?
Would you really expect them to keep the same picture on a driving license from when somebody passes their test at 17 right through to when they are 70?

If you have an old paper type you don't need to update it, count yourself lucky, they could have made it a legal requirement for everyone to change to a photo card, but instead they are just leaving it until they all work their way out of the system.
if you have the old style then count yourself lucky that you have no need to change to new style.
so don't ever move house...........
well the license issued now are photcard one so eventually there will won't be any "just " papers one's. i license check at work and when i started they were mostly paper, now its the other way round.
^ Unless your address changes and even then the change over to Photcard is free. But then they've got you for the photo renewal fee later on...
There's a shop near me that do stuff like key cutting, shoe repairs, dry cleaning, and do photos which are guaranteed to be accepted by dvla and the passport people etc, else you get your money back. Its about £5 for 8.
I find it difficult to believe that anyone begrudges paying less than 17p a month for their driving license.

if you have a passport in date then you can apply for driving licence online as they can use same photo.

My dad is gutted that he has to change his driving licence to a photo one just because he wants to rent a vehicle when on holiday.
I've still got the paper one and I moved house 3 times since then....

Come to think of it...I use to have a paper one. Haven't got a clue where it is. I've never had a problem hiring cars or anything...
''we would want a decent photo as we are using the next picture for 10 years''

True... but having said that, on my new Passport the 'electronic' scan of the photo I supplied is truly awful in terms of clarity and vanity... and it took me bloody ages to get a pic I was happy with too ;-p
he has to have a UK photo one, ummm, hes hiring one of those big motorhome things in New Zealand
I've never hired a car abroad before....
I applied and got a photo card license within the first month of them being available (they were free for the first few months) because I was going to the states regularly at the time, as it's law to always carry photo ID on you in the states I figured I'd much rather risk losing a driving license while abroad than my passport.
Thankfully I have saved myself quite a bit of money by retaining the old style licence. (Nosha - I dread to think how many photos I would need) However the slate is cumbersome to get in and out of my handbag. Have just noticed though how my signature has evolved over several decades

ummmm
if you haven't update to your new address then it's not valid any more
Posted my Photocard Licence to DVLA on Friday 1st April for renewal and received it back today Friday 8th. No new Photo required and Free of charge, so very good service from them.
